ADF Long Tan
Youth Leadership &
Teamwork Awards

Welcome to the
ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Awards Website.

David Sabben served in the Vietnam War and was an infantry platoon commander at the Battle of Long Tan. In this video he discusses the values and qualities displayed by the Australians during that battle, and how the Long Tan Youth and Leadership Awards plays an important role in honouring that sacrifice.

The financial component of the award is paid by electronic funds transfer.

The Department of Defence collects personal information from the recipient for the purpose of making a payment to them as a winner of a Long Tan Award. This includes their email address and bank account details.

If they have concerns about how Defence handles the personal information it holds, or they would like to access or request a change be made to that information, the recipient can contact the Defence Privacy Officer

Further information is also provided in the Defence Privacy Policy

The ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Awards started in 2006 to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader local community. At the same time, they recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others and “mateship”, characteristics that are integral to Australian society.

The awards are an important initiative by the Australian Government in conjunction with the Australian Defence Force designed to encourage senior students – tomorrow’s leaders – to actively participate in the life of their schools and local communities.  In 2007 some 2100 schools participated.  The number of schools participating today is over 2400.

Why Long Tan?

The Battle of Long Tan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Australians. In recognition of one of the defining moments in Australian military history, in August 2006 the then Prime Minister announced that it would be fitting to name the awards the 'ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Awards'. It is also a fitting tribute to the Long Tan veterans, as the very traits they demonstrated such as determination, mateship, teamwork, tenacity, compassion and leadership, are the same attributes we hope to encourage and recognise in students.

How will students be recognised?

Students are selected by their school principal based on the criteria set out on the selection criteria sheet available as a download from this site. Each school may select one student from each of Years 10 and 12. Recipients of a Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award will receive a certificate and a financial reward - $250 for a Year 10 student and $550 awarded to a Year 12 student. A copy of the award guidelines form is also available as a download.

When will the awards take place?

Names of recipients are generally called for in July of each year; the YLT Awards team then make every effort to have the Awards available for the recipients during September and October. It is expected that the Awards will be presented to recipients at the annual speech night or other appropriate major school assembly. Submissions that miss the August deadline will only be considered under exceptional circumstances.
Schools may request an ADF representative to make the presentation. This is best done using the online application when you confirm your intention to participate. Early notice will give us the best chance of providing an ADF representative.
